Red Clover Isoflavones

Isoflavones are the most beneficial of a class of compounds called phytoestrogens, which have a balancing effect on your own oestrogen levels. There are four types of isoflavone and Red Clover is one of the few plants to contain all four - genistein, daidzein, biochanin A and formononentin. All four types of isoflavone are converted by bacteria in the gut into substances that have an oestrogenic action.

Balancing Oestrogen Levels

Plant oestrogens have the ability to help both when your own oestrogen levels are too high, and when they are too low.

When your levels are too high, the plant oestrogens can compete with your own oestrogen at receptor sites. Because the plant oestrogens are not as strong the effect of the body's own oestrogen is diluted.

When your levels are too low there are empty receptor sites available which the plant oestrogens can fill. Despite having a gentler action that human oestrogen they nevertheless provide a significant boost in overall effect.

A study where post-menopausal women took red clover for two weeks and followed an oestrogen rich diet showed significantly higher oestrogen levels which fell once the supplements were stopped. Other studies have shown reduced menopausal symptoms of hot flushes and mood swings within a month of beginning red clover supplementation. The women also reported a more positive outlook on life and increased energy levels.
